The Comfort Touches That Make Us Different

·By Dr. Bennion

A dental office doesn't have to feel like a dental office. From the day we opened Old Betsy, we set out to build a place that feels a little more like a friend's living room than a clinic — because for an anxious patient, the small stuff isn't small at all.

The train theme, and why it matters

"Old Betsy" is named after a beloved old steam locomotive, and the train motif runs through the office for a reason. Friendly, familiar imagery gives your eyes something warm to land on the moment you sit down. It's a small thing — and small things add up when your shoulders are tense.

Heated neck wraps and warm blankets

When you settle into the chair, you'll be offered a warm neck wrap and a soft blanket. It sounds simple, and it is. But the physical sensation of warmth tells your nervous system "you're safe here" in a way no pep talk can. A lot of patients tell us they finally exhale for the first time once the blanket goes on.

Snacks, drinks, and a soundtrack

You'll find coffee, water, and snacks in the front, and headphones and a music or podcast pick of your choice in the chair. If you've ever wished you could just zone out to your favorite playlist instead of listening to the cleaning, that's the point.

Pillows, stress balls, and stop signals

Lumbar pillows for your low back, a soft stress ball to squeeze, and a clear "raise your hand and we stop" rule. None of these are fancy. All of them tell you, again and again, that this appointment is on your terms.

Why we bother

Because a lot of folks who walk through our door haven't been in a dental chair in years — sometimes decades — because of fear. Comfort isn't a luxury for those patients; it's the thing that makes care possible at all. When the experience feels human, people come back, and the small problems we catch early stay small.

Come see for yourself

The best way to understand the vibe is to feel it. Stop by our Keene office for a tour any time — no appointment, no commitment, no awkwardness. We'll put the coffee on.
