What to Expect at Your First Visit (When You're Nervous)

·By Dr. Scroggs

If you've been putting off a dental visit because the thought ties your stomach in knots, you are exactly the kind of patient we built this practice for. Here's what your first visit actually looks like — start to finish — so the unknown stops being part of the worry.

Walking in the door

You'll be greeted by name, not a clipboard. The waiting room is warm and quiet — no jangly TV news, no clinical chill. If you'd rather wait in your car until we're ready for you, just text us. That's a totally normal request and we're happy to accommodate.

Paperwork, made painless

We send most forms to you ahead of time so you can fill them out at home, in pajamas, at your own pace. When you arrive, there's usually just a quick signature or two. If something's confusing, ask — we'd rather slow down than have you guessing.

Meeting your dentist before any work

A first visit at Old Betsy starts with a conversation, not a tool. We sit down, ask what's been going on, what you're worried about, and what you'd like out of coming in. If today you only want to talk — no exam, no cleaning — that's a perfectly valid first visit.

The exam itself

When you're ready, we'll take a gentle look around: digital X-rays if you're due, a comfortable exam of your teeth and gums, and a quick check of your bite and the soft tissues. We narrate as we go, so nothing happens without you knowing what it is and why.

Going at your pace

You're in charge of the chair. Raise your hand any time and we stop. Need a water break? Done. Want to come back another day for the cleaning instead of doing it now? Easy. There's no quota, no rushing, no "while you're here" surprise add-ons.

The plan, in plain English

Afterward, we'll sit you up, hand you a cup of water, and walk through what we saw — in normal words, with pictures if it helps. If anything needs attention, we lay out the options (including "watch and wait" when that's fair), what each costs, and what your insurance is likely to cover. You decide what happens next, on your timeline.

Come meet us, no pressure

If a first visit still feels like a leap, our new-patient page covers what to expect, what to bring, and how we work with anxious patients. When you're ready, we'd love to meet you.
