Toothaches have a cruel sense of timing. They get loudest the moment you turn out the lights. If you're staring at the ceiling right now, here's what actually helps — and what doesn't — until you can be seen.
First, take stock
Notice what kind of pain it is. Sharp when you bite? Throbbing constantly? Worse with hot, cold, or sweets? Better when you sit up? None of these change what you do tonight, but they're useful for us in the morning, so make a mental note.
What tends to help at home
- An over-the-counter pain reliever you normally take (and tolerate). Ibuprofen, when it's safe for you, often does a nice job on dental pain because it's anti-inflammatory.
- A cold compress on the outside of your cheek for 15–20 minutes at a time can ease swelling and dull the ache.
- A warm salt-water rinse (about half a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) is gentle and can help calm irritated gums.
- Sleep with your head elevated. Lying flat increases blood flow to your head, which can make a throbbing tooth worse.
- Avoid chewing on that side and steer clear of very hot, very cold, or very sweet foods until you're seen.
What not to do
- Don't put aspirin directly on the gums or tooth. It can burn the tissue.
- Don't apply heat to the outside of your face for an aching tooth. Heat can encourage swelling.
- Don't ignore it and hope it resolves. Toothache pain that comes and goes still usually means something needs attention.
When it's an emergency, not a "wait till morning"
Call right away (or head to an ER, depending on severity) if you have:
- Swelling that's spreading into your face or neck
- A fever along with the tooth pain
- Trouble swallowing or breathing
- Pain so severe that nothing touches it
Those signs can point to an infection that shouldn't wait.
