What Counts as a Dental Emergency? (And When to Call Us Today)

·By Dr. Argyle

Dental problems have a way of showing up at the worst possible time — Friday night, before a trip, the morning of a big meeting. The hardest part is usually knowing whether it's something to handle Monday or something to call about today. Here's the honest breakdown.

Call us today

  • A knocked-out tooth. Time matters. Pick the tooth up by the crown (not the root), rinse gently, and if you can, slip it back into the socket. If not, store it in milk or saliva and call us.
  • Severe pain that won't let up. Throbbing that keeps you from sleeping, eating, or focusing usually means something is brewing under the surface.
  • Swelling in your face, jaw, or gums. Especially with a fever — this can signal an infection that needs prompt care.
  • A broken tooth with pain or sharp edges. Large fractures, exposed nerves, or a tooth that's painful to bite on need attention soon.
  • Bleeding that won't stop. A little ooze after an extraction is normal. Bleeding that won't slow with firm pressure for 20 minutes isn't.

Usually can wait a day or two

  • A small chip with no pain
  • A lost filling or crown that isn't hurting
  • Mild, occasional sensitivity to cold
  • A canker sore or a cold sore
  • Food stuck between teeth you can't quite flick out

These deserve a visit — they just don't have to be tonight.

What to do in the meantime

For pain, an over-the-counter pain reliever you normally take is reasonable. A cold compress on the outside of the cheek can help with swelling. Rinse with warm salt water, avoid chewing on the sore side, and steer clear of very hot or very cold foods. Don't put aspirin directly on the gums — it can burn the tissue.

Same-day care, when you need it

We hold time in the schedule every day for emergencies, and we'd much rather you call than tough it out. Even after hours, leave a message — we check them.

If you're not sure, just call

"Is this an emergency?" is one of our most common questions, and there is no wrong reason to call. We'll talk it through with you and tell you straight whether to come in now or in the morning. Reach our Keene office any time during business hours.
