Here's a question that catches almost everyone off guard: did you know a lot of dental care can be billed to your medical insurance — not just your dental plan? Most dental offices never do this. We do, and it can open up coverage patients had no idea they had.
Why you've probably never heard this
Billing medical insurance for dental care takes extra training and paperwork most practices simply aren't set up for. So they bill dental-only, and the medical option never comes up. We built that capability in-house specifically because it helps our patients afford the care they need.
What can often be billed to medical
When care is medically necessary, a surprising amount may qualify — for example:
- Oral appliances for snoring and sleep apnea
- Surgical extractions and certain oral surgery
- Dental treatment after an accident or injury
- Care tied to an infection or an underlying medical condition
- Biopsies and oral pathology
- Exams and 3D imaging connected to a medical diagnosis or a planned medical procedure
What still goes through dental
We're not saying medical covers everything — routine cleanings, exams, fillings, and most everyday dental work stay on the dental side. But when something does qualify for medical, we catch it and bill it correctly, which can mean real savings.
The sleep apnea example
The clearest case is an oral appliance for sleep apnea. Because sleep apnea is a medical condition, the appliance is typically billed to medical insurance rather than dental — something a lot of patients are relieved to learn.
We handle the hard part
You don't have to untangle any of this. We review your care, figure out whether any part of it can go through medical, verify your benefits before you commit, and file the paperwork for you. The whole point is to make sure the coverage you're already paying for actually gets used — dental and medical both — so your out-of-pocket lands as low as honestly possible.
Curious if it applies to you?
