If you're missing several teeth — or thinking about replacing a full arch — you've probably heard about both dentures and dental implants. They're very different solutions, and the right one depends on you. Here's how we talk it through with patients in the chair.
What each one is
Dentures are removable replacement teeth set into a gum-colored base. They rest on your gums (and, for partials, clip to remaining teeth). Modern dentures look natural and, when made well, fit comfortably.
Dental implants are small titanium posts placed into the jawbone that act like tooth roots. We can use them to replace a single tooth, a few teeth, or anchor a full set of fixed teeth (like All-on-4). Implants stay in your mouth — you don't take them out.
The honest trade-offs
- Stability and feel. Implants feel the closest to natural teeth — you can bite into an apple or a steak without thinking about it. Dentures have come a long way, but they sit on the gums and can move, especially on the lower arch.
- Bone health. Implants stimulate the jawbone the way natural roots do, which helps keep bone from shrinking over time. Conventional dentures don't, which is part of why long-time denture wearers sometimes see their facial shape change.
- Time. A good set of dentures can be ready relatively quickly. Implants usually involve a healing phase, though same-day full-arch options exist for the right candidates.
- Cost. Dentures are generally the lower upfront investment. Implants cost more upfront and tend to require less adjustment and replacement over the long haul.
- Maintenance. Dentures come out for cleaning. Implants you brush and floss like your own teeth.
Who each option tends to suit
Dentures can be a great fit if you want a faster, more affordable path to a full smile, or if a health condition makes surgery less ideal. Implants tend to suit folks who want the most natural feel and bite, and who like the idea of teeth that stay put. Many patients land somewhere in between — for example, a denture that snaps onto a few implants for stability.
